George Mills

Obituary of George Mills

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son and brother, George Mills, on September 9, 2020, after a life long, courageous battle with Muscular Dystrophy. George's inspirational journey began on February 12, 1970 on Long Island, NY. Despite being diagnosed with Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy at a young age, he approached life with a determined spirit. He attended elementary school and junior high on Staten Island and Long Island, NY, where he made a lasting impact among fellow classmates and teachers. In 1985, he moved to Winsted, CT. He attended Gilbert High School and was proud to be a Gilbert Yellow Jacket. He had many fond memories of being the manager of the Gilbert football team. After graduating in 1988, he attended Northwestern Community College, where he pursued an Associate's Degree in Recreational Therapy. His spirit truly shined as a member of the Student Senate, a disc jockey for the school radio show and a dedicated student worker at the College Library. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus and became a 4th Degree Knight. After graduating college, he was a conscientious and stand out employee in Retail. He particularly enjoyed working at Pet Smart in Philadelphia and Clearwater, FL. He later enjoyed working at Mervyn's Department Store in San Diego, CA. In 2002, he moved back to Winsted, CT and was a vital member of the community, proudly serving as a member of the Winchester Recreation Board and the Disability Board. While a member on the Disability Board, he procured grant money for the video phones for the students enrolled in the Deaf Studies at Northwestern Community College. George had a genuine love of life and had many interests. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed playing Chess, Poker, working on various political campaigns, discussing politics and reading about American History. His knowledge about History was evident while watching Jeopardy. He could name all of the American Presidents and Vice Presidents in chronological order. His affinity for history lead to his quest to learn more about his own family history. In particular, his discovery that he was a direct descendant of Governor Bradford on the Card side of the family lead to his dedicated and documented research of Revolutionary heroes in his family required for his induction in the Sons of the American Revolution in 2015. In the past few years, he resided in Las Vegas, NV. He was predeceased by his grandparents, sister, Mary Frances Mills, his father ,Uncle Bill and Aunt Yoshiko Card and is survived by his mother, Patricia (Card) Mills, his sister, Diane Carlucci, his Uncle and Godfather, Dennis Card and cousin, Jackie (Card) Esack. A funeral service has been postponed due to the current Covid-19 restrictions. A Memorial Service in the East will be held in 2021 to celebrate the incredible life of George. Details of the Memorial will be provided at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
