Gary Phillips

Obituary of Gary Wayne Phillips

Gary Wayne Phillips, age 68, was born in Quanah, Texas on December 10, 1952, to Chester and Bettye Jo (Eckford) Phillips. He was the third child of a family of ten. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Rosa L. Phillips Dickens Houston, brothers, Eddie D. Phillips and James E. Eckford, and sister, Valerie A. Scott Bailey. Gary grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and graduated from Albuquerque High School. He spent some time as an Albuquerque Police Officer until he was called to a more 'adventurous' lifestyle. He spent most of his life in Nevada-Las Vegas was his city of choice. His friends called him "OG" ('old-school/original gangsta'): He was so cool to be around because of his good nature and fun-loving attitude; but if you really made him angry, the 'gangsta' would show up! He was a man's man. Bold, good-looking, and not at a loss for admiration by his peers. He leaves behind to mourn his loss, sisters, Doris M. Scott Johnson (New Mexico), Karen D. (Daniel) Pettiford (New Mexico), Ravonne R. Nevels (Texas), two brothers, Kervis P. Nevels (Oklahoma) and William B. Nevels (Washington), two Aunts, Margaret (Charlie) Johnson (Louisiana) and Eunice (John) Green (California), and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. We will always remember him as the tall, slender brother with the gift of gab, who loved to laugh and give advice to everyone. Rest in peace, dear brother. We love you. A memorial celebration will be arranged in the near future to honor Gary. In lieu of cards or flowers, please kindly post a memory or a kind word.
